“KSA & I Are Closer Than Many Think” Ebenezer Obey Tells City People

EbenezerObeyWhen King Sunny Ade clocked 70 last week Wednesday, Ebenezer Obey was one of the veteran artistes who was in Ondo town to honour the Birthday Boy. Not only did Obey Commander travel to Ondo, he spent 3 days. He arrived the ancient town in the evening of Tuesday 21st September and left on Thursday 23rd back to Lagos. Not only that, Obey canceled all his engagements to be with his brother, both of whom have dominated the Juju music landscape for over 50 years. Over the last 5 decades, both Obey & KSA had rocked the music scene like no other artistes has done.

Both have a lot in common. They are both Oldskool. They are both in their 70s with Obey being the older of the 2. What has been the nature of their relationship since they met in the 60s? How does Obey see KSA? What about the story of their hot rivalry told by many at the time.

In this exclusive interview, Obey Commander tells City People Publisher, SEYE KEHINDE the story of his over 50yr friendship with KSA. Read on!

How do you see KSA at 70?

First and foremost I want to give thanks to Almighty for KSA’s life. It is God that allows a person to witness 70 years on earth. So I see KSA’s 70th birthday as a thing of joy. I am happy for my brother and I am congratulating him again on his 70th birthday and I pray that the Lord will give him sound health and more success in life to attain greater heights for the remaining days, years he will be spending here on earth in Jesus name.

How did your relationship start?

I believe God brought both of us together and to have reigned together for several decades now. And the Lord has been so good to both me and KSA. What has happened to me and KSA can only be from God. We have stayed on and to have been there for several years despite all the challenges. That can only be God and not man. That is why I appreciate what the Lord has done from our early ages to this time, God has been so merciful.

Lai mohammed, ksa, wasiuHow did you meet KSA?

It all started well over 50 years ago. But we thank God by his own infinite mercy he has kept us. I thank all those who have helped us in the past like the media, for your contributions. It’s been a very supportive one and also a big thank you to all our fans all over the world. On behalf of King Sunny Ade and myself, I want to say a big thank you to all of you.

Our relationship started many years back, when KSA was with his former boss, Baba Sala. And I was with Fatai Rolling Dollars. We started from that point. But I started my band before him. And when he started it was a good thing that he came on the scene and we were happy together. And ever since then we have been good brothers and friends.

Both of you play Juju. But you play 2 different kinds of Juju and you have both kept it going for decades, can you analyse the 2 of you musically?

Yes we both play Juju music but definitely I have my own identity and KSA definitely has his own identity. When Obey is singing, you will know. When KSA is singing you will know.

We both have distinct voices. You can easily identify who is playing. Although the 2 of us play Juju music, we are playing 2 kinds of Juju music. Obey’s brand of Juju music is different from KSA’s brand of Juju music.

How were you able to manage your musical careers that you never clashed all through?

We never clashed. We can never clash. Our music can never clash. The reason is because I have my voice, KSA has his own voice. He specialises in Guitar with his music. I am a very good composer. Yes, I play Guitar. But we both have our strength. My strength lies in my composition abilities, and my control of the wordings and my presentations. Anytime people want to listen to Obey, they know what they want to listen to. And anytime anybody wants to listen to KSA, they know what they want to listen too.

They know what to expect. Of course, KSA has his own stage showmanship, and his Guitar. He is known for that. That is why both of us are known for different identities.

But each is playing his part very well. So, people have been looking for Obey and they continue to ask to dance to it. People have been looking for Sunny and they continue to ask to dance to it.

You have your way of entertaining your fans when you are on stage. You don’t dance like Sunny does. You only dance on a particular spot in a Jelenke way? Why did you adopt this style?

Yes I have my own style of simple movement on the stage and I concentrate more on the power of my music. The power of my music is intense, it is consuming. People cannot listen to my music and not be moved. People cannot listen to Obey and sit down without dancing. People love to listen to meaningful lyrics that I render all the time and the beating of my music is irresistible. You can’t hear my music and sit down. It moves people. It makes you to want to dance. I have stuck to my simple movement on stage. I always want to be myself. And I have always been myself.

When you and KSA started out and began to grow big, how did you manage the rivalry and competition?

There was nothing like Rivalry and Competition. You people call it that. KSA has always been my friend. I have said it several times, and I am going to say it again.

People call it competition. But KSA and Obey didn’t see it as competition. I never saw it as competition. There was no competition. I am rendering service. He is rendering service. In 2 different ways.

Let me tell you the truth which most people don’t know. There has never been a time that there was a fight between me and KSA.

But people believe you have quarreled so many times. How come?

No. I am telling you the truth. KSA and Ebenezer Obey have never fought or quarreled. We are closer than people think. People just say it. At a point, when the talk about Obey and KSA quarrelling became hot years back, Adeolu Akinsanya and I.K. Dairo of blessed memory, called both myself and KSA to a meeting. We went there and they told us we are hearing rumours of a fight, that both of you are fighting. Are you fighting? We both laughed. They were shocked. They asked: What is the cause of the fight? He kept on laughing. I looked at Sunny.

Sunny looked at me. And we busted into laughter. We now told them that there has never been anything like that between us. They were shocked. The 2 elders then said, if that is the situation, you two go and sing and tell your fans and the whole world that there is no fight. We did. That was in 1968.

And so Sunny recorded Oro to nlo eba wa ki ye si. Ti Sunny ba nkorin, nwon ani Obey lo mba wi. Ti Obey ba nko ti e nwon ani Sunny lo mba wi. Oro yi o sele. Ko selee rara. Sunny ko ba enikan jaa, Obey to ba eni kan binu, aye e da ke isokuso.

I too sang my own and I referred to it the way Adeolu Akinsanya and I.K. Dairo said it. I sang the song Oro ija emi ati Sunny Ade a o fi igba kan ja. There has never been any fight between us. That was how we resolved that controversy which had no basis in truth. And ever since we have been more friendly, more brotherly. So close is Sunny and I that, many atimes in the past, Sunny used to come to me for counsel. He will tell me things and will ask for what I think.

He comes to my house. I go to his house too. We exchange visits. That is why up till today we are friends and we remain friends. People don’t know we are close. When it was time for us to do Oleku Concert for instance, where the 2 of us performed, it was KSA who came to me to discuss it, that someone wants to bring us together to perform.

He was the one who came to me to tell me about the show and that he thinks it’s a good idea and I said fine. I said KSA if you approve, that is fine. That is how close we are. If I have anything to discuss with him. Thank God we have kept that bond together. And it is growing stronger. I thank God I later went into the Ministry and Sunny too now is a child of God. We thank God for all that God has done.

When both of you meet, what do you and KSA talk about?

We talk about our music, our business. How we can move it forward. We share experiences. I share my experience with him. He shares his own with me, like that so, it has been a very cordial relationship.

What is the future of Juju music? And how come you and KSA have managed to be relevant for over 5 decades, year in year out?

I can proudly say that Juju music has sustained some other music Ayinde Barrister (of blessed memory) was very, very close to me. I used to advice him, I used to talk to him, I used to share idea with him. That is why when you see Funji today, you will see Juju influence in it. There is no kind of instrument that we use in Juju that they don’t use, that is an influence. I am saying I am part of that infuence. There are a few things Sikiru Ayinde took from me.

By the time I started using Bata, Sikiru Ayinde came to where I was playing in Abeokuta and he said haaa! Commander I like this Bata that you are playing sir. Me too I will copy this sir. I said okay. Go ahead. You have it. Anything you want, you can have it. Later, he started playing keyboard and all that. Today, when you listen to K1, atimes when Wasiu wants to play Fuji he injects Juju into it.

He plays Juju music and you will know this is real Juju music. So all that aspect of Juju they introduced into their music, I am part of it and I am happy that has sustained Fuji music. That is what we want. We want progress. All music must develop and be progressive. So when we want to talk of Juju music that is a major contribution, I have contributed to, to uplift Fuji music.

Many were surprised that you spent 3 days in Ondo last week to celebrate with KSA during his 70th birthday, How come you devoted a lot of time for KSA?

Haa. It’s because of 2 reasons. When I was 70, KSA and I celebrated it together. He was with me and we were together throughout that my celebration. It has come to his turn now, I have to support him.

What you don’t know is that all my life, KSA has played at my events. When I was 40 years old, KSA played at my birthday. You know I am a few years ahead of him. When I was 40 he played for me at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos. When I lost my father in 1980, KSA played for me, Barrister played and Dele Abiodun played.

When my 2 children were wedding at Tafawa Balewa Square, we played. There is nothing I do that I don’t get Sunny involved. That is how it has been. It is my joy to have been in Ondo with him. I was happy and I had a nice time with him and I will always be with him for other celebration.

Who Will Awujale Make The Next Ogbeni Oja?

Awujale of Ijebuland

That is the big question now on many lips of Ijebu people, as many Ijebu people wonder who the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona will make the next Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuland. It is one of the biggest titles in Ijebuland which is the prerogative of the Awujale. The title is usually given to a very successful businessman who is accomplished in his chosen career.

In recent history, the 2 men who have held the title are accomplished men of immense means. The first Ogbeni Oja was late Chief Adeola Odutola, an Ijebu icon who in his lifetime was easily one of the most successful industrialists in Yorubaland.

When he died, the Awujale made Otunba Bayo Kuku, the next Ogbeni Oja. And he again was a very rich and successful businessman.

He died about 3 years ago. Since then, that seat has been vacant. Translated to English, the title means Leader of Commerce & Business in Ijebu. So, who will Awujale pick?.

City People asked so many prominent Ijebu people who they think Oba Sikiru Adetona should pick but no one could mention specifically anyone. This is because there are many qualified people.

Could it be Glo Chairman, Otunba Mike Adenuga? He is one Ijebuman that the Kabiyeesi likes so much. They are related. Awujale’s mum is the siter of Mike’s mum.

He is currently a member of the Council of Awujales Otunbas of Ijebuland. He is also a member of Awujales Royal Court. Awujale has conferred on him the title of Otunba Apesin of Ijebuland.

Could it be the Fototek boss, Chief Adegunwa? He is also rich and close to the Awujale. He is from Ososa.

Could it be Oba Otudeko? He is a successful industrialist. He is close to the Awujale as well. All those Awujale would have preferred to choose are all old Chief Chris Ogunbanjo is in his 90s. He is the Olotu of Ijebuland and a member of the Royal Court, Professor Adebayo Adedeji too is old.

He is the Asiwaju of Ijebuland and the Olotu-Fore. He is the current Deputy Chairman of the Council of Awujale Chiefs of Ijebuland.

Another person who many mention is Chief Sonny Kuku. He is the Acting Chairman of the Council right now. He is the Olorogun of Ijebuland.

He is an accomplished Medical Doctor and Businessman. And the Chairman of a big bank. But will the Awujale replace a Kuku with a Kuku? There is also the Babalaje of Ijebuland, Chief S.O. Bakere popularly called Oluwalogbon. He is a rich businessmand who sells cars. There is also Otunba Jubril Martins-Kuye, a former Minister and a successful businessman who plays big in the paper business.

He is Otunba Fesojoye of Ijebuland. Or will the Awujale make his bossom friend Otunba (Dr.) Micheal Olasubomi Balogun (CON) the next Ogbeni Oja. Going by his intimidating profile he fits the bill. He is a successful businessman.

He is the founder of FCMB. He has so many titles to his credit. He is the Olori Omo-Oba Akile Ijebu and the Otunba Tunwase.

He is also one of Awujale’s most respected Chiefs.

eletuThere is a big family in Lagos, who controls large expanse of inherited land in Osapa Lekki area of Lagos. It was formally called Osapa Village but later changed to Osapa London due to drastic development to the area. Osapa London is a home/town to many people, more especially to the Gbadamosi Eletu family. Chief Gbadamosi Bamidele Eletu-Odibo was a big name in Lagos before he died. He was the Traditional Prime Minister to the Oba of Lagos. He installs Kings.

“No Eletu, No Crown” as they say.

The name Eletu has continued to wax stronger, even despite the demise of Chief Gbadamosi Bamidele Eletu.

There are 4 brothers who have been promoting the name (Eletu) since their father is late. These 4 brothers are always together. They attend party together. Each of them have Rolls Royce car. They love to dress in white attire. And talking of big socialites in Lagos today, these 4 brothers’ names will always pop up. They are big boys, who control a lot of resources.

In 2013, the Eletu family in Osapa started an annual celebration, which will serve as their own “Ojude Oba”.  But presently it’s called Osapa Day because they are yet to have a King.

The family (Eletu) celebrated its 4th Osapa Day on the 13th of September, 2016.

The event had who is who in the society in attendance. Malaika Alao and Adewale Ayuba were the 2 Fuji musicians, who thrilled everyone with performance.

Present at the event was High Chief Waheed Tajudeen of Ojoraland. Chief Tajudeen is popularly called “Oba Lola” of Osapa (king to be). He is always dressed in white outfits.

Chief Tajudeen is the face of Eletu today and a big brother to the late Chief Gbadamosi Bamidele sons.

One of them is Alhaji Mudashiru Gbadamosi Eletu Odibo. He controls a large expanse of land in Osapa, he is the eldest son of the late Chief Gbadamosi Bamidel Eletu. The handsome and soft-spoken man married to Omowunmi Ashabi.

Omowunmi is a beautiful young woman, who has a sexy body. She was seen dancing to Malaika Alao’s melodious song in her black and gorgeous gown, during Osapa London Ileya’s party, last week.

Prince Ademola Eletu is the second. He is very close to Prince Kazeem Gbadamosi Eletu. They both build house side by side. They share things and often, they are seen together in most events. Prince Ademola is a big player in Real Estate and Oil & Gas. Prince Ademola is well built in posture. His long bears also makes him more sexy to the admirers. Prince Ademola’s wife is Olabisi Ashabi. She is a young and light skin lady.

She is very good looking, just like her husband.

The last and the most active of all of them is Prince Kazeem Gbadamosi Eletu Odibo. He  has done a lot to promote his father legacy. He is a big Philatropist and a kind hearted man. Prince Kazeem Eletu Odibo is the Chairman of Prince Kazeem Royal Properties a Real Estate Firm that has done a lot of remarkable project in Osapa, London, Lekki.

Prince Kazeem has singlehandedly built all the roads leading to his estate. He has just completed another project, called White House. He has also just completed another road project in Osapa, that will be commissioned soon. All these are built with his personal money. Prince Kazeem’s only wife is Kate Eletu, who lives in Paris, France.

Prince Kazeem the youngest among his brothers. When City People interviewed him 3 months back, he said his late father was the Traditional Prime Minister to the Oba of Lagos. And they have been in Osapa close to 200 hundred years.

In 1977, the Gbadamosi Eletu family claimed to have acquired 254. 558 hectares of land within Osapa London area of Lekki from the Ojomu Chieftaincy family and entered into a deed of conveyance, dated August 23, 1977 with the Ojomu Chieftaincy family to document the purchase of the land and evidence the interest acquired by them.

In 1989, Lagos State Government compulsorily acquired a vast area of land, consisting of many villages and settlements in the Lekki axis, this vast area of land included the Eletuland. In 1989, the Ojomu Chieftaincy family and other land owning families through their accredited representatives filed Suit No. ID/18-83/89 at the Lagos State High Court, challenging the acquisition of their land by Lagos State Government. The claim of the Ojomu family covered the Eletuland, which had been acquired by Lagos State Government. Following the success of the land owning families at the High Court of Lagos, the Lagos State Government entered into negotiations with the Ojomu family and it was agreed that some of the acquired land would be excised by the Lagos State Government and ownership rights over the excised land vested in the Ojomu Chieftaincy family.

In 1993, the Gbadamosi Eletu family brought an action against the Lagos State Government in Suit No. M/779/93, Major Murtala Gbadamosi Eletu and Ors VSA.G of Lagos State and Ors relying on their Deed of Conveyance from the Ojomu Chieftaincy family. So, in 2013, the Eletu finally won at the Supreme Court after they had lost at High Court and Court of Appeal.

Since then, the Eletu family has been living in wealth. Most of these family members are all over the continents. About 5 women who are Gbadamosi Eletu live in the US. They all came home last week to celebrate the annual Osapa Day. Some of them are Wosilatu Eletu Odibo, Kuburat Eletu Odibo, Falilat Eletu Odibo, Sherifat Eletu Odibo, and Musilimot Eletu Odibo.

Biafra: 2nd Judge Withdraws From Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial

Nnamdi Kanu discusses with lawyer in court_1The judge presiding over Nnamdi Kanu’s trial, John Tsoho, has returned the case file to Ibrahim Auta, chief justice of federal high court, for reassignment.

This was sequel to an application by the legal team of Kanu led by Chuks Muoma, claiming that the court was biased in its handling of the matter, The Cable reports.

“We are only asking the court to hands off; my client has lost confidence in this court,” he said.

He claimed that the court was acting in line with the suggestion of President Muhammadu Buhari that Kanu was not going to be released under any circumstance.

The counsel said that if they did not get the relief they sought, they would proceed to the International Court of Justice.

Muoma said any proceedings in the case, following the claim that a petition was written to the National Judicial Council (NJC) to protest against the court, would “stifle it”.

“I understand that there is a letter to NJC, though I haven’t seen it and the CJ has replied saying that the matter will be investigated,” he said.

“I would urge you that you transfer the matter; I would suggest that it be sent back to the CJ.”

Responding, the judge said: “I have no interest in trying your matter and I will return it to the CJ, but I will condemn the attitude of that counsel. I do not care if you take your case to another planet.”

He said that making a ruling on the said application was an attempt to “pre-empt” the outcome of the petition sent by Kanu’s lawyers to the CJ.

However, in a ruling, the judge who prevented the prosecuting counsel from speaking, said: “This case is hereby transferred to the CJ.”

This is the second time in nine months that a judge would be withdrawing from Kanu’s trial.

In December 2015, Kanu refused to take plea on a six-count charge of treason, importation of illegal good and possession of fire arms filed against him by the Department of State Services (DSS), saying he had it on good authority that Ahmed Mohammed, the trial judge, was biased.

“I will rather remain in detention than subject myself to a trial that I know amounts to perversion of justice,” he said.

“I will not have a fair trial in this very court because information available to me indicates that I will not receive fair trial before this very judge.”

The judge, who “found nothing wrong” with Kanu’s utterances, withdrew from the case, saying: “I am of the view that the first defendant has the right to object to be tried in any court. I do not see any wrong with the issues raised.

“Justice is all about confidence. Would the prosecution not raise similar objection if occasion had presented itself. Let it be clear that the defendant is not challenging the validity of the charges against him.”

Mohammed said section 396 of the administration criminal justice Act used to deflate the objection did not apply in the circumstance.

“It is on this premise that I remit the case file to the office of the chief judge for re-assignment,” he concluded.

Kanu’s travail with the secret police started in October 2015 when he was arrested shortly after he arrived the country from his base in the United Kingdom.

He was accused of criminal conspiracy, ownership of an unlawful society and attempting to split Nigeria, and he was held in DSS custody for months before the service arraigned him in court.

Cow

Senate Committee on FCT, has ordered the slaughtering of Cows found in the city centre, after continuous movement of cows in the City Centre despite several warnings by the Federal Capital Territory authorities,

The directive was handed down to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Alhaji Mohammed Bello when he appeared before the Committee on Monday.

Committee Chairman, Senator Dino Melaye, in his address registered Senate’s disappointment at the manner Fulani herdsmen defy the order that they should not move their cows in the capital city, insisting that the Minister must carry out Senate’s position on that.

“Honourable Minister, Senate as an institution is not happy at how Fulani herdsmen continue to move their cows across the city centre, which we are aware you have given directive against that some time ago. ”

“From now, get knives and ask your men to slaughter cows found in the capital city or prosecute herdsmen seen with cows in the city centre with a fine of N50,000 per cow. This order must be carried out,” Dino said.

Dino further revealed that the Senate had received complaints that some residents of the territory were converting their apartments into hotels and brothels, a situation he said was distorting original master plan of the city.

He noted that some people were already undermining FCT authority under his watch which he said was unacceptable.

Meanwhile, the hearing of the FCT officials and Nigeria Military who appeared before Dino Melaye-led Committee over unconstitutional acquisition of 238 hectare of land situated at Maitama extension could not continue.

In response to the Committee’s demand that the said plot was being investigated based on petitions it received from the public that Nigeria Military had chased away FCDA contractors who were working on infrastructure earlier in the months, the minister pleaded that FCDA be allowed to discuss with those concerned, believing they would revert to the Senate.

Major General Pat Ake who appeared on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff corroborated that Nigeria Military was capable of resolving the impasse with FCDA, maintaining they were ready to comply with the outcome

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Babatunde Raji Fashola and President Mohammadu Buhari
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Babatunde Raji Fashola and President Mohammadu Buhari

Following the statement credited to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu demanding the resignation of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, National Leader of the party has denied a media report that he “bombed” President Muhammadu Buhari.

Tinubu was quoted to have made some remarks about Buhari, including that the latter begged him to emerge president in 2015.

In a statement by the Tinubu Media Office yesterday, Tinubu stated that the story was concocted by political enemies.

The statement reads: “In the past 48 hours, we have noticed the churning out of falacious and outright malicious stories in the social media concerning Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

“We want to state that the stories are patently false and we urge unsuspecting Nigerians to ignore the lies being spread and the wicked stories about what Tinubu purportedly said or did.

“The stories being churned out are being done by some fifth columnists who seek to drive a wedge between these leaders.

“One of such stories is the one entitled ‘Tinubu Bombs Buhari,’ which is fit only for the trash can and a figment of the writer’s imagination.

“Asiwaju Tinubu remains a staunch APC stalwart and supporter of the APC government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari. Tinubu is preoccupied with assisting to find solutions to the present challenges now confronting us as a nation and nothing will distract him from doing this.”

Tinubu allegedly made the comments when he received a segment of APC chieftains from the South West who paid him a solidarity visit late on Monday.

He was quoted to have said: “I regret building APC and giving Buhari a platform to become president.

“We all knew he didn’t merit to be president, but you know how we politicians behave when we are desperate for electoral position; We beg.

“That was how President Buhari always and frequently came to my private house here in Ikoyi with his entourage which included that Nasiru and others.

“At a point, he was practically living in my house, under my roof. The room he was sleeping was just 6-7 steps from my own private room. I was building his confidence because he didn’t have it. He was even scared of Atiku and Rabiu.

“What I ate, he ate. My security was his security because he expressed fears about the security provided by the Jonathan government. He was afraid of Jonathan.

“Now they occupy Aso Rock and they think Asiwaju Tinubu is finished. He is using people I brought from obscurity against me. Now they say my mouth is smelling. They say I’m no longer relevant. The battle line is drawn, I will show them the meaning of Asiwaju.

“I know they have surrounded my house. They are there outside. You can’t see them but I know where they are. I see them, but I am not afraid of them. They know that.”

When asked “what next” by one of the loyalists, who said: “What do we do now?” Tinubu was quoted to have replied: “Don’t worry, just watch. Time will tell, I built this party and I can destroy it, but for now, I vow, PDP must win Ondo State.

ooniThe Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has described King Sunny Ade as a living legend worth celebrating.

Ogunwusi made the remarks at a public lecture to mark King Sunny Ade’s 70th birthday at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

The theme of the lecture was: “Nigeria music Industry; the falling standards.”

The Ooni said that King Sunny Ade’s experience in the Nigerian music industry was worth emulating by upcoming artists.

Ogunwusi said: “We are all here today to celebrate another leader in the music industry; I personally took it upon myself to be part of this event when the organiser came to me.”

His royal majesty lamented that Nigerians were yet to imbibe the spirit of celebrating Nigerians who had distinguished themselves in various disciplines in the country.

Ogunwusi also decried the inability of experienced hands in the industry to mentor the younger ones.

The monarch lamented: “It is sad that mentoring school is no longer in this country.

“There is a sharp disconnect between the older ones and the youth, and this is getting wider by the day; when last did the youth get in contact with their legend.”

Ogunwusi urged King Sunny Ade and other stakeholders in the music industry to mentor upcoming musicians’ as well as the youth for a better tomorrow.

In his remarks, King Sunny Ade said he was happy to be alive to celebrate his 70th birthday.

Sunny Ade, who said that he was lucky to clock 70 years, noted that he was happy to be honoured by Oba Ogunwusi.

Sunny Ade said: “The late Ooni Okunade Sijuwade made me to be closer to him while alive, and now the new Ooni Adeyeye Ogunisi is moving closer to me.

“I think I am one of the luckiest to be close to the royalty.”

The legend also commended the Ooni’s efforts in reuniting Yoruba monarchs.

Sunny Ade, who celebrated his 70th birthday on September 22, was born in 1946 in Osogbo.

Ezekwesili: “Change Should Begin With Those Who Promised Change”

Oby Ezekwesili meets Mr President
Oby Ezekwesili meets Mr President

Former education minister, Oby Ezekwesili has said that the change promised by the Muhammadu Buhari administration must first be exhibited by the government itself.

Ezekwesili made the comment in reference to the government’s recently launched “Change Begins With Me” campaign.

Read her article titled, “Before We Sell Public Assets”, below:

As if the current unclear economic policy context was not disconcerting enough, the sudden emergence of a raging debate on the sale of public assets has escalated one’s fears that easier things seem to appear more attractive to the government. Yet, in public policy, it is wise to be wary of the easiest options.

As a pro market economy advocate, I inherently support any programme of government that will help roll back the public sector from the economy because economic evidence shows this to be almost always correct. However, lacking the sound economic management and policy context as yet, I am presently opposed to what sounds like a proposal for “distress option” sale of public stakes, especially in NNPC and NLNG.

But the government can proceed urgently through the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) to sell off those cesspools of corruption in our petroleum sector otherwise known as refineries. Their sale would in fact amount to fiscal savings beyond the proceeds and should therefore be supported by all.

I am opposed to the sale of any productive assets like the NLNG because there seems to be no clear economic vision and rigorous analytics to serve as the anchor for such a major policy thrust. We need well deliberated policies from our government including the plans for revitalization of the programme of privatization being run by BPE to properly situate public debate of economic structural change agenda.

After all, even in our country, there is now proof that the economy can relatively respond to deliberate, well thought and rigorous analysis of context and sound policy options in resolving growth and development problems.

The evidence that backs this is that it was a modest range of such sound economic policies that helped deliver an average of 5-6 percent growth of our economy on a sustained basis over a long period of nearly a decade and half. It was only recently at the end of 2015 that growth dropped to below 3 percent.

True, the relatively impressive economic growth rate did not resolve the major challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality. That 61 percent of our population is poor, according to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (2011 Household Survey) is indicative of how growth and poverty reduction can often times disconnect. Also, according to NBS, unemployment rate stood at 10.5 percent at end of 2015 and grew to 13.3 percent by the second quarter of 2016, revealing that the economy is severely failing to absorb new entrants into the labor market — especially the 2-2.5 million youths that seek to do so annually.

With a high income inequality rate of .4 Gini-coefficient instead of a score closer to a perfect zero, the gap between our top income earners and the majority bottom poor earners is one of the highest in the world and is the reason why Nigeria stands at number 26 out of 190 countries. So, yes again, there are very deep challenges that growth did not yet resolve for Nigerians since the early 2000s when it became normal in the economy.

However, we can objectively admit that if we had not grown steadily at those higher rates from 2003 – 2014, the economy would not have expanded as significantly as it did in the sixteen years of our 1999 cycle of democracy. The expansion of our GDP offered more diverse opportunities in sectors like telecommunication, agriculture and agri-business, entertainment and services.

In real human terms, a growing economy provided more and newer opportunities for citizens than was the case during the lost decades of the 80s and 90s known mostly for no, low or negative growth. The concept of economic growth must therefore not be derided nor dismissed as some usually do.

The fundamental anchor for Nigeria’s long period of economic growth was, when starting since 2003, policy makers managed to achieve macroeconomic stability through an effective mix of monetary, fiscal and some measure of structural policies.

Whereas not many citizens would normally concern themselves with the rather arcane concepts that engage the minds of economic and finance technocrats; yet, growth policies are fundamental to economic progress of individuals, households, governments and businesses. This is becoming obvious to Nigerians in the last twelve months as more citizens now better see the relationship between growth and the fact that some who once had a job no longer have one.

What then was the genesis of the loss of economic growth? It came from the fact that we learned nothing from previous mistakes in the manner of poor governance of resources, especially oil earnings. Nigeria was once again extravagant during the most recent five years of oil boom.

That this happened even after the country turned the corner in 2003 when it set up oil-based fiscal rules on how best to save in plenty in order to prepare for the lean period, is all the more disappointing.

Regrettably, in the period between 2010 and 2014 when oil prices were exceptionally high and several other oil-rich countries were accumulating reserves, Nigeria was acting out an alternate reality. We were incongruously borrowing during plenty to expand the consumption habits of all the levels and arms of government.

The parlous state of the Nigerian economy on 29th May, 2015 should therefore have instructed an incisive and urgent macroeconomic stabilization programme to realign price levels in the economy. If a menu of sound monetary and fiscal policies that the economy needed on May 29, 2015 had been provided, it would have sent the right signal to players that there was no cause for alarm.

Had the government made quick and necessary adjustments that corresponded close enough to the level of impact that a 40 percent sharp drop in government oil revenue necessitated, the story would most likely be less negative today.

There is a new level that our post 2014 oil-shocked economy must find for stability in order to stop tottering reason and so we do need a string of policy responses that can enable this happen quickly.

Such responses would have helped the economy absorb the shock, reassured investors and consumers, and thereby helped reasonably retain investor confidence. But that did not happen. The attendant fiscal pressure and the delayed right policy response were severe enough that by the end of 2015, economic growth sharply declined to 2.7 percent.

It was a major mistake that the economy did not get the timely and right type of policies that could have helped us avoid the calamitous collapse into negative growth in the last two quarters of 2015 that finally led us into a recession.

The signals of statist economic policy preferences did in fact worsen matters and set off the wave of uncertainty that dented investor confidence in the economy. So, it is accurate to conclude that both the preceding and the successor governments conspired by their actions and inactions to throw the Nigerian economy into the deep rut from which it must be rescued to avoid social implosion.

The record of the government for timely and right action on the economy is however so far not encouraging. For almost one year, the government delayed right action on the fuel subsidy regime despite its aggravating impact on fiscal imbalance.

Over the same period it delayed the right action on exchange rate policy despite its deleterious impact on foreign reserves, the value of the Naira and the rate of inflation. The government finally retraced its steps on the wrong petroleum subsidy regime and fixed exchange rate policies some five and four months ago respectively.

But the design and implementation of those policy changes were half hearted and therefore remain doubtful in their fiscal and monetary impact. The reluctance to fully embrace tested and sound policy options was what minimized the salubrious impact that the two highlighted key policy changes would ordinarily have had on stabilizing the economy.

With inflation- nay, stagflation- now at high double digits of 18% , with the decline of foreign reserve from $37.3 billion at end of 2014 to $25billion in September 2016, with an “administrative-floating ” exchange rate regime that still creates enormous opportunities for corruption and rent seeking arbitrage, with a high interest rate that poses a stress for the financial sector because of deteriorating bank asset quality as well as for limited access to credit by the real sector, with a continuously declining aggregate demand, with a shrinking gross domestic product, with 2016 budget deficit level of $11billion that still has unclear sources of financing; what more do we need before citizens stepped up a demand for the government to retrace its steps from its string of unsound economic policies?

All the sobering data are indicators of hugely deteriorating macroeconomic indices. The more such indices deteriorate, the harder it is for growth to resume. The macroeconomic stability that poor choice of economic policy helped to unravel within one year had itself taken many years of arduous work to achieve.

When therefore one hears the rather simplification of the economic recovery antidote being espoused by the government as “we shall spend our way out of recession”, it heightens anxiety. When one further hears that the sale of assets- especially some productive ones – is being proposed as key contribution to the Budget 2016 deficit financing options of the government, the immediacy of opposing such intention becomes self-evident.

For Nigeria therefore, the most critical challenge that needs resolving is how to convince the federal government to urgently retrace its steps back to what it failed to do since 29th May, 2015. First, it failed to launch a deep fiscal consolidation program. Second, monetary policies failed to adjust to reflect new realities.

Third, the government failed to present the most ambitious structural reforms ever that can materially improve the productivity and competitiveness of all potential existing and new sources of economic growth.

The third action could achieve the four decade-long diversification goal and help build a resilient economy that is insulated from the volatility of oil prices in the future. These three broad actions were and still remain the key things mandatory for the economy to regain the lost macroeconomic stability that will drive growth recovery, move us to economic development and shared prosperity.

It is good economics to stimulate economy through increased government spending in a time of recession. So, there is a place for the stimulus spending proposed by the government. However, the economic vision that will arrest the macro imbalance in the short run must be deeper than the proposed plan to “spend, spend and spend”.

After all, if massive government spending were to be the solution that can fix our economic failures, then they should never have happened in the first place based on our public expenditure record. Government spending has been the albatross of our economy. The current administration has not communicated any persuasive basis for assuming that it’s proposed spending will achieve a different set of outcomes without being anchored first on sound economic policies.

The current language of “massive spending” is therefore very unnerving because it is not accompanied with a corresponding agenda for massive restructure of the behemoth and the governance system that easily widens its mouth to gulp the largest scale of public resources.

By the way, whatever happened to the report of the Presidential Committee on the Rationalisation and Restructuring of Federal Government Parastatals, Commissions and Agencies which found that the cost of governance in Nigeria is one of the highest in the world? Did the report not recommend the scrapping of 102 statutory agencies on which we continue to spend scarce resources? Where is the fierce urgency required to implement this game changing report that can help roll back one of the most unproductively expensive governance architecture in the world?

I have a simple message: The Federal government should do the right first things, first. Change should begin with those who promised Change!

buhari2President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja congratulated the government and people of Edo State on the successful conclusion of the gubernatorial election, and the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Godwin Obaseki at the polls.

In a telephone call to Governor Adams Oshomole, President Buhari commended the well-articulated campaign programme of the APC in the state, the doggedness of the governor, governor-elect and party members in going round the state to reach the people with records of good governance over the years and a promise of continuity.

According to the President, the outcome of the election clearly reflected the mood of the people to sustain the pedigree of responsiveness, forthrightness and diligence that Governor Oshomole brought into the service of his people.

‘‘The victory is good for democracy, for Nigeria and the people of Edo State,’’ he said.

President Buhari said the victory was well-deserved as the campaign train, which he joined, worked hard to sell its people-centered manifesto.

The President also applauded the conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, corps members and electorate in ensuring a peaceful election.

INEC had announced that Obaseki won the majority of the votes cast, with a total of 319,483 votes, and he was closely followed by Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the PDP, who polled 253,173 votes.
