Governor Nyesom Wike in the early hours of (Saturday) today mobilised to stop alleged attempt by men of the Department of State Security, DSS and the Police to abduct a Judge at his number 35/84 B residence, Forces Avenue, Port Harcourt.

The governor who fielded questions from newsmen in front of the Judge’s residence said he was manhandled by men of the DSS and the Police who came to whisk the judge away.

“What has happened this night is unfortunate. Even in military government it has never happened like this , you listen to people. This is why we are here. I said not under my watch will I allow this type of activity take place.

“The DSS, Police they cocked their guns and said they will shoot me. And I told them I have never heard this type of thing happen before. Again this is to show that more of this will come.

Wondering why the security men will choose 1 am to storm the residence of the judge the governor said their action portend danger for the nation’s democracy.

He said all he expected the security men to have done was to invite the judge, adding that if he had ignored the invitation then other legal steps should have been taken.

Continuing, he said he did not bother to know the name of the judge but he only had to come out to stop the attempted abduction of the judge because as Chief Security of the state he would not allow such lawlessness take place in his state.

A visit to his house off Isa Kaita Road, Malali along GRA,  Kaduna shows no sign of affluence or of someone who lives big despite being a former Governor of the state “I am not a greedy person, I am living comfortably well according to my needs” he tells City People’s Kaduna Correspondent, Asabe Ndoma. A leading member of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) Balarabe Musa bears his mind on current national issues i.e Recession, calls for restructuring and governance, saying the government of President Buhari is “non focused and a self seeking administration” who are more interested in self servicing and personal approval than alleviating the suffering of all Nigerians, but will rather pay lip service to the plight of the people. At 80 and still going strong he said those calling for restructuring are  promoting self interest above public interest.

He also disclosed that being a farmer has kept him very active while engaging in a healthy lifestyle. Read on!

What has kept you going?

Well, I am a farmer so I am always on the move, and then, I live comfortably,  so these are the most responsible factors for what you asked me.

You still live like a common man and not in a state of affluence?

Yes that is what I mean by comfort.

So now you don’t put yourself into unnecessary stress or pressure?

I avoid it, I can tell you what ever the pressure it takes me not up to 15minutes before I sleep. And I sleep at least 7hours daily, so you can see my state of mind.

Even with the hardship and recession, you are still at peace with yourself?

Of course.

Now that we are in a recession, the economy is not doing well, and as a statesman, what advise will you give the government?

That is the root cause of the recession, recession implies that social economic & political system controlling development in the country and its political leadership are based first on self-interest and secondly on public interest.  Perhaps the question to ask ourselves first of all is what is the root cause of the recession,

So what is the way forward?

The way forward is to change the social economic and political system controlling all development in the country and the political leadership produced by the system. As I said, most of  it are based on self interest first, public interest second or even incidental. Now I will give you history as justification for what I said, before 1970 the policy, the system in Nigerian Government was largely based on public interest first and enlighten self interest second and since 1982 during the Shagari tenure, the system was gradually systematically changed into the other side, that is self-interest first and public interest second or incidental. Shagari started it  the  hostility where government spent less on public service. And now it has led to a worse situation, a clear leading role of private-public leading role as opposed to leading role of the state and the economy to ensure peace, equality, justice, dignity of the human person and progressive development. And there is no doubt about this now. Today the Senate President who represents the other side of Government came openly and agrees with the president on the policy of the leading role of the oil sector in the economy.

Look at the suffering now in Nigeria, look at the recession and then you are calling on the parasitic private sector to take control of the economy of the country, what do you expect?

So what you are saying now is that this move by the Government is a very wrong move?

It a very wrong move, the Government has consistently been told this, since that initiative by leading role of the economy started particularly in 1982 when Shagari for the first time started this exploitative hostility measure.

You don’t seem to be in agreement with most of the policies of the present government?

Of course, am not in support.

Why sir?

Because if you can remember the President was elected by 15million Nigerians out of 70 million register voters. So he is somebody who emerged in a situation of apathy so you can say it is a minority Government. In a situation which demand for a strong leadership base on moral and constitutional authority. Now there is constitutional authority because he was elected no doubt about it but there was moral deficiency in the sense the quality of the voting was low 15million out of 70million so the President ought to be more careful than he is now.

But there are some areas that he should be commended like fighting corruption and insecurity?

Well take the case of Corruption and insecurity he made both of them the most important three policies of his government or when he was campaigning. But take the case of corruption, in what way has the anti-corruption war really affected the attitude of Nigerians towards corruption, not at all. No significant person has been probed prosecuted and effectively punished for corruption. And now you can easily say the government is led by people who do not have clean records as far as corruption is concerned except in the case of the president himself and so on.

Some people have said that his ministers are afraid to tell him the truth because they might be sacked?

He deliberately chose people who will always say yes sir, and according to our analyses right from  time, steps were taken to compose the Government that is to appoint the ministers and other chief executives but we saw this clearly coming up.

We saw an attempt to go to a rally and choose ministers and other Chief Executives and I saw quite clearly out of those nominated after waiting for so long we didn’t see those that have the necessary qualification to be ministers. Buhari should have chosen people who are articulate, you don’t just bring in any body. It must be somebody who has a track record so that immediately he is mentioned, everybody will say oh yes he can make it. This was not the case except in case of four of the ministers. All the others were virtually unknown people  he wanted to give a chance to help.

What advise will you give Government so that the country can come out of recession?

First of all the recession is the rebirth of a lot of negative factors including the level of unity of government in the country and the first thing is to reconcile Nigeria so that the pursue for National Unity and development of the whole country comes first, any other thing second.

Secondly, deal decisively with this disenabling level of corruption, stealing and criminal waste of resources. Look before 1970 nobody could steal even a kobo and get away with it but what is the position

now, with this position how can you achieve any progress in the country.

Are you also suggesting we go back to Agriculture?

Of course, not just agriculture alone but let us have a balance industrial structure, we cant ignore oil because oil has kept us for so long so we can’t ignore it but we should diversity, it return to agriculture and create opportunities in other sectors of the economy like mineral.

Some people also say the government has no strong economic team, what do you think?

The Government has no economic team at all because the team is made of public officials what should be is that the people ought to be independent. For instance the private sector should play a reasonable role. Those patriotic Nigerians should be there, but at the moment now it is just a committee of Government officials it is not independent under the Vice-President. The economic team needs to be independent of the Government to tell the President the state of the economy that doesn’t stop the Government from having it’s own subcommittee.

So coming to Kaduna State, How would you rate El-Rufai’s Government?

NO, no, I do not comment on home matters I leave that for others in my party to do, we should concentrate on National affairs. Except where there is a critical situation.

Now some people have called on restructuring of Nigeria, what is your take on that?

Yes I support restructuring but you see, different people have different ideas about restructuring and some of the ideas are so negative, some of the ideas are based on ethnic sovereignty which means we have four hundred ethnic entities in Nigeria otherwise let us have four hundred sovereignties. This is negative, there are some who simply because of this problem of National understanding feel that the North decides everything in the affairs of the country and this North has to be stopped and the only way to do that is to split Nigeria using restructuring but there are restructuring which is necessary because Nigeria has developed over a period of one hundred years and it needs renewal.

Secondly, things are changing throughout the world and we should take advantage of changes in the world to change the structure. For example

our experience has shown us that we should go back to our regional arrangement we had before the military came. Before the military came Nigeria had five viable units, four regional governments and all the five were viable. We have less resources in the country. Sadly Nigeria is not an organized economy   but it is the richest in terms of what it have. So we can afford to create viable units inform of regions that can take care of themselves without the federal Government  they only need the federal government in two areas to lead in bringing about national unity, to lead in bringing about balanced economic development, in that way resources in terms of allocation for a moment is wrong and not good for national unity and balance economy with the Federal Government taking so much. Now what advise will you give, for curbing farmers’ herdsmen clashes? Well, a responsible government, the body language of the president alone can stop this.

Are you in support of steps taken by Government to stop Niger Delta aggression?

I think the measures relies too much on force, and it will not succeed because of two reasons. One, you are dealing with fellow Nigerians, you can’t destroy them without destroying Nigeria. Secondly, they have a case, they may be misusing it but they have a case, the first case is as a result of living in the area as a result of oil, their lives being destroyed in many ways and government should take note .

So you will suggest dialogue?

Yes, we have seen what dialogue have done in spite of his weakness, Umaru Ya’adua’s dialogue brought peace for everybody including the Niger Delta.  But now that the Federal Government has allowed the continuation of killing of the resources made available for the development of the area, its impunity.

Also promises were made to the people of the area as a result of the Umaru Ya’adua led dialogue and the government has not come out to say otherwise. So they have a case.

So what time do you make out to go to the farm and stay with family?

I am always on the farm. Every day after 10 o’clock am on the farm and return around 6pm but I have stopped it now because am getting old. Am now 80 years old so I can do what I used to do.

What kind of food do you enjoy most?

I like fura, and I take a lot of Vegetables, Fruits and Meat a lot.

So what will you want to be remembered for?

I have done what I ought to do, that’s all.

The Different Sides Of Rising Land Prices In Mende, Maryland

maryland-shopriteOver the last twelve months, land prices in Mende, Maryland (one of the most affordable real estate locations in the central part of Lagos Mainland) has seen notable rises. Mende is located on the stretch of land by the right hand side of the Maryland Tunnel/ Bridge when going towards Ojota from Anthony on Ikorodu Road; one of the landmark developments in Mende is the KICC Christian Worship Centre. Mende has three major parts, Arowojobe Estate, Okupe Estate and areas outside the two estates.

A review of land prices in these areas over the last one year shows similar and consistent patterns of rise. While land prices measuring approximately 748sqm in Arowojobe Estate and Okupe Estate has risen from N10million-N15million and N50million-N55million to N20million-N30million and N60million to N65million respectively, those of areas outside the two estates like Sunmola, Adekoya, Atila and Ajayi Streets have risen from N8million-N10million to N15million-N20million.

Cane Village In Maryland, Lagos.

“The demand for the relatively affordable plots of Mende when compared to those of areas like Ikeja GRA and other parts of Ikeja is one of the reasons why land prices there have continued to rise”, says Hakeem Ashimi of HAS Properties Limited. According to Ashimi, there are more than fifty completed or ongoing medium sized multi-unit estate developments in Mende. “The developers have simply swamped the virgin plots in Mende and in a situation where demand is more than supply, prices are expected to naturally go up”.

Apart from being cheaper alternatives to the plots of the other expensive estates not far from Maryland, Mr. Kayode Adebayo of Kayode Adebayo and Co. a firm of Estate Surveyors and Valuers says the demand for plots in Mendeis also about its easy accessibility from almost all parts of Lagos. “Mende through Bank Anthony Way is less than ten minutes’ drive, and less than thirty minutes’ drive to the Island from either the Third Mainland Bridge or Ikorodu Road via Eko Bridge. Developers understand that the market for developed properties in Maryland is high and have simply been investing heavily in Mende where the virgin plots of the densely-developed Maryland are located”, he explained.

NOTE: Arowojobe Estate used to be an open community but now gated managed as a private estate. Infrastructure within the estate like roads and drainage networks are not in top shape. Okupe Estate on the other hand started as a privately developed estate and the road and drainage channels in the estate are in very good states. Prices quoted in the chart are for plots measuring approximately 748sqm.

What Do You Gain Living In Ikorodu? What It Presents To Renters

ebute-ikorodu-8Ikorodu is one of the most densely populated outskirt locations in Lagos. For low-income earning renters, it is one of the ideal locations to live in because of the huge supply of rental apartments with “pocket-friendly” prices. But what does living in Ikorodu look like and what are the pros and cons for renters working on the Island?

RENTAL PRICES

Ikorodu is divided into two main parts (central and interior). In the central parts of Ikorodu like Agric, Isawo, Benson, Ebute, Igbogbo and the main Ikorodu Town a typical 2 bedroom flat rents for N180K-N200K, while a 3 bedroom flat rents for N250K-N300k. In the outskirts of Ikorodu Town like Odogunyan, Ogijo, Agbowa and Imota a 2 bedroom flat rents for N100k-N150k, while a 3 bedroom flat rents for N200k-N250k per annum.

QUALITY OF THE APARTMENTS

The typical rental apartments in Ikorodu at the prices highlighted above are new and come with basic finishing and facilities like tiles, pvc ceilings, fitted kitchen, ample parking space for cars and water supply from privately dug boreholes. They also come with large living rooms and bedrooms as well as dining areas and guest toilets. There are a couple substandard rental apartments in Ikorodu but for the purpose of this article, we have narrowed our findings to the properly done apartments.

TRANSPORT CHANNELS & COSTS

There are three public transport channels available to residents of Ikorodu who work on the Island; commercial buses by private operators, BRT operated by government and ferry services by private operators.Riding on the commercial buses requires breaking the journey into two parts (Ikorodu to Ojota and the Ojota to CMS), the BRT now runs directly from Ikorodu to the Island same with the ferry services that runs directly from Ebute in Ikorodu to CMS and Victoria Island. On the average, a journey from the central parts of Ikorodu to the Island through the privately operated commercial buses cost N400 while a ride on the BRT costs N200. A ferry ride costs N750. The ferry is the fastest but many still don’t do the ferry thing because of the lack of safety standards on our water ways. However, it is fast becoming popular as a means of transport to the Island for renters in Ikorodu.

TRAFFIC TIME

During peak periods (5am-10am and 5pm-10pm) when the roads are extremely busy, traffic time from Ikorodu to the Island is between 2 and 3 hours and about half of that during other periods. Riding on the BRT would reduce the traffic same with the ferry service that could reduce the time to between 20 and 25 minutes.

KSAI Have Known KSA Since The 70s – Oloye ‘Lekan Alabi

Juju music maestro and king of World Beats, Dr. Sunday Adeniyi Ishola Adegeye, MFR, popularly known and called “KSA” was 70 years old on Thursday, 22nd September, this year. The talented musician and stage ace, was celebrated in Nigeria and other parts of the world.

Whereas the actual birthday (22nd September, 2016) was, as expected, celebrated in Ondo town, Ondo State, KSA’s hometown and state, pre and post-event celebrations in form of concerts, lectures, dinners, parties etc were held in his honour in the United States of America, United Kingdom, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Ibadan, Oyo State, Lagos.

As I write this tribute, more KSA’s 70th birthday celebrations are pending within and outside Nigeria between now and December, this year.

KSA continues to receive honour and admiration at home and abroad because of his immense talent as a musician, guitarist and dancer, but moreso due to his business acumen, humility, good cheer and integrity.

I have known and been close to KSA since my years as the entertainment editor of the now-defunct Sunday Sketch, Ibadan in the 1970s. The world’s latest septuagenarian, among his other values, cherishes friendship.

We held the Ibadan-end of the global celebration of the three-time Grammy Award nominee at the Jogor Centre, Oke-Ado, Ibadan on Sunday, 2nd October, this year. The concert titled “KSA The Legend at 70” wherein 15 artistes of different genres of music entertained, attracted the royal presence of Kabiyesi the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogunguniso 1, and his Oloris, Dr. Yemi Farounbi, a former Ambassador of Nigeria to the Philippines and also a former General Manager of the former NTV Ibadan, Africa’s first television station, now called NTA Ibadan Network Centre, the President  of the Gospel Musicians Association of Nigeria (GOMAN) Evangelist Funmi Aragbaye, the Otun Balogun of Ibadanland and former Special Adviser to former President Sheu Shagari, High Chief (Dr) Femi Olaiya among others.

The good fortune of telling the world who King Sunny Ade, the celebrant is, fell on my shoulder at the Ibadan celebration. Following is the re-cap of my presentation of the above title at the celebration:

“ Three years before KSA’s crowning as the King of music, I, in 1974, as the entertainment page editor of the Sunday Sketch, had conducted a public opinion survey on the social scene in Nigeria. In my review on Sunday, December 29, 1974 published on page 7 of the Sunday Sketch of the said date the people’s verdict was that the then Sunny Ade was “the best dressed musician and his band, the African Beats, the largest crowd puller.” I shall come to this very shortly, but let me quickly attempt the assignment given to me – that of telling the whole world the KSA I know.”

BIRTH

Born on 22nd September, 1946 in Ondo to the late Pa Samuel Adeniyi Adegeye and the late Mama Mariam (nee Adesida of Akure). Both parents were from royal families in Ondo & Akure respectively. At birth, KSA was christened Sunday Isola Adeniyi Adegeye.

KSA was the last of 11 children of which only the last three survived. Mama Mariam Adegeye had KSA when she was 50. His birth was predicted by a prophet who told his mother that she would bear a son whose fame would put Ondo, his hometown on the world map for good. But the prediction came with ONE condition – it would only be fulfilled if KSA’s parents raised him outside Ondo. In addition , the prophet said mysterious things would happen to the child of destiny every five years until he turned 45. If he survived these mysterious occurrences, said the prophet, his parents should stop worrying about his safety. Thank God, KSA passed the 45 years mark 25 years ago!.

EDUCATION

KSA’s parents took no chances and moved to Osogbo. He started primary school education in 1954 at the African (Church) Primary School where he spent four years before moving to Methodist Primary School, also in Osogbo for two reasons – One, many of his friends at the African Primary School had moved to Methodist. Two, the young Sunny had become fascinated with Catholic priests and wanted to become one. The Methodist School was opposite St Benedict’s School owned by the Catholics. The youngman wanted to be close to Catholics as much as possible. He wanted to attend St. Benedicts, but was not given admission.

By the time Sunny completed primary school education, he had fallen in love with music and had taught himself to play drums. He was admitted into St. Charles Grammar School, Osogbo in 1960. According to him, the admission seemed to be the beginning of some great educational attainment. Hear him: “But, indeed it was the end. After one term, I lost interest, because I had been exposed to the sweet music of Sunday Ariyo (a bandleader) who happened to be our neighbour”.

“To cut a long story short, Sunny dropped out of school, was arrested by music and early in 1963, he had got an offer from a band in Osogbo led by Idowu Owoeye, to go on a playing tour of Abeokuta. Even though Owoeye’s band had not been invited to play at the coronation of the late Alake, Oba Adesina Gbadebo, there was a chance to make money because the trip coincided with Oba Gbadebo’s coronation. The hope was dashed!

“The band got stranded in Abeokuta. After two weeks of frustration, hunger and desperation, Sunny, who had lied at home that he was going on school excursion to Lagos decided to face his destiny by running to Lagos to join, Brother Ayo, who had earlier abandoned the Owoeye band in Abeokuta to join Moses Olaiya ( the famous Baba Sala) in Lagos.

“After scaling many hurdles, luck smiled on him and he finally joined Brother Ayo and eventually the Moses Olaiya band in Idi Oro, Lagos from where he received the blessing of his boss, Moses Olaiya to form his own band, the former Green Spot band. The rest is history.

“In capturing my relationship with the King of World Beats, KSA, let me state that it started in the late 1960s, when he released the chart – bursting single play titled “1966 Challenge Cup”. In 1963, my late father bought me my first transistor radio set. It became my inseparable companion and an outlet to local and world affairs, especially music. Those were the years of Nigeria’s most- listened-to radio station, the defunct Western Nigeria Broadcasting Service (WNBS) and its sister station, the Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) – Africa’s first television station, opened in 1959. The station was star-studded with giants like Yinka Johnson, Tunji Marquis, Kunle Olasope, Toun Adeyemi, Yomi Onabolu, Anike Agbaje-Williams, Julie Cker, Victor Adeniyi, Adebayo Faleti, George Jobartech, Bola Alo, Bola Barber (now Mrs Ogunlade).

“As a proud member of the “King of Boys Circle” led by our irresistible impessario, the late Chief Afolabi Majekodunmi alias “ King of Boys” ., in the late 1960s, one was a  regular attendee of WNTV’s highbrow programme “Come, let’s dance” featuring top bands including Sunny Ade’s Green Spot Band which Later became the African Beats and compered by the late screen goddess-turned-lawyer, Auntie Toun Adeyemi. May her soul rest in peace. As TAXI Drivers Now Complain Bitterly

+How It Provide Jobs For Many Unemployed Youths

All the elites in Lagos have become Uber freaks. For most celebrities who need to move from one point to another and need a chartered cab, Uber has become their first choice of transportation. This is because it is easy to get. To get a cab via Uber all you need do is to download an application that enables you call the Uber number for a cab. Once you call, Uber would offer you a clean cab that is near the area you are calling from. In less than 10 minutes, a clean unpainted cab would arrive.

It is usually luxurious cars. The charges are usually affordable and it is even cheaper than painted cabs or existing car hire cabs.

So effective and efficient are Uber cabs their effectiveness is beginning to affect traditional Taxi business and the Drivers are complaining bitterly. Many Taxi drivers who spoke to City People last week complained about the negative effect of Uber on their business. They are worried that UBER would likely drive them out of business.

What many also don’t know is Uber Technologies Inc. is an American multinational online transportation network company headquartered in San Francisco, California. It develops, markets and operates the Uber mobile “app”, which allows consumers with smartphones to submit a trip request, which the software program then automatically sends to the Uber driver nearest to the consumer, alerting the driver to the location of the customer. Uber drivers use their own personal cars. As of August 2016, the service was available in over 66 countries and 507 cities worldwide. The Uber app automatically calculates the fare and transfers the payment to the driver. Since Uber’s launch, several other companies have replicated its business model, a trend that has come to be referred to as “Uberification”.

The legality of Uber has been challenged by governments and taxi companies, who allege that its use of drivers who are not licensed to drive taxicabs is unsafe and illegal;[8] some taxi driver unions have called Uber drivers “pirate taxis”

Uber was founded as UberCab by Garrett Camp, the founder of StumbleUpon, and Travis Kalanick in 2009. The company received $200,000 in seed funding that same year. In 2010, Uber raised $1.25 million in additional funding.

Following a beta launch in the summer of 2010, Uber’s services and mobile app officially launched in San Francisco in 2011. Initially, Ryan Graves was appointed as CEO, however, Kalanick replaced him in the role later that year. Graves stepped down to become the company’s COO.

By the end of 2011, Uber had raised $44.5 million in funding. That year, the company changed its name from UberCab to Uber. The name “Uber” is a reference to the common (and somewhat slangy) word “uber”, meaning “super”, and having its origins in the German word über.

OPPOSITION

As Uber grew internationally, it also began to experience disputes with governments and taxi companies in those regions. In April 2014, Uber was banned by the government in Berlin, although the company remains active in other German cities. The ban is still being discussed as of December 2014. Taxi drivers in London, Berlin, Paris and Madridstaged a large-scale protest against Uber on June 11, 2014.

SELF-DRIVING CAR RESEARCH

Also in February 2015, Uber announced a collaboration with Carnegie Mellon to establish the Uber Advanced Technologies Center, a new facility in Pittsburgh meant to support research in the development of self-driving vehicles. Uber announced the first customer trial of autonomous taxis which was to take place by the end of August 2016 in Pittsburgh, but was overtaken by nuTonomy, which launched the first public trial of electric self-driving cabs in Singapore on 25 August. Uber launched its first self-driving car services to select customers in Pittsburgh, including Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, on September 14, 2016.

Uber has a fleet of Ford Fusion cars each equipped with 20 cameras, seven lasers and GPS and radar equipment. These enable the car to create a three-dimensional map utilising landmarks and other contextual information to keep track of its position. They have established an ‘Advanced Technology Center’ to develop this technology in the Strip District, Pittsburgh.

HELICOPTER SERVICE

Also in 2016, the company partnered with Airbus to test an Uber service with helicopters in São Paulo, a city famous for its extreme traffic congestion and for having the largest helicopter fleet of any city in the world. The test, which lasted for one month, was Uber’s first helicopter service that was not limited to specific events. Uber has offered helicopter service at the Cannes and Sundance Film Festivals. In September 2016 Uber has announced that it’s researching the possibility of developing small planes that can vertically take off and land (VTOL), so they can be used for short-haul flights in cities.

MAPPING UK CITY STREETS

In September 2016 Uber began mapping UK city streets in an effort to identify the best pick-up and drop-off points. The lift-sharing firm plans to extend its mapping activities to other British cities including Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds.

The rise of companies like Uber and GrabCar, and the changes they catalysed have started a discussion over the general transition to peer to peer transactions across industries. The parallel rise of platforms such as Netflix, Apple TV, and AirBnB in other industries has led to comparisons with the rise of Uber and debate over whether and to what extent uberisation may displace traditional business models.

SOFTWARE AND SERVICES

The Uber app software requires the users and drivers to have a smartphone.

PRICING AND PAYMENTS

A Uber ride in Lagos, Nigeria visible on the dashboard is a phone running the Uber app.

Uber’s pricing is similar to that of metered taxis, although all hiring and payment is handled exclusively through the Uber app and not with the driver personally. In some cities, if the Uber car is travelling at a speed greater than 11 mph (18 km/h), the price is calculated on a distance basis; otherwise, the price is calculated on a time basis. At the end of a ride, the complete fare is automatically billed to the customer’s credit card. Uber has said its prices are the premium that the customers pay for a cab service that is not only reliable, but also punctual and comfortable. In April 2016 Uber began allowing drivers to place signs in their windows stating that they can accept tips.

In May 2015, Uber started testing cash payments in India. The pilot project was started in the Indian city of Hyderabad. In September 2015, Uber tied up with Airtel India to allow cab users to pay using Airtel mobile wallet service. It also allows users to use Airtel 4G data at no charges.

SURGE PRICING

Uber uses an automated algorithm to increase prices to “surge” price levels, responding rapidly to changes of supply and demand in the market, and to attract more drivers during times of increased rider demand, but also to reduce demand. Customers receive notice when making an Uber reservation that prices have increased.

Surge pricing makes supply and demand match so efficiently that the waiting time is almost always below five minutes, regardless of the circumstances. Surge pricing increases economic efficiency in two ways: 1. rising prices motivate more drivers to start driving, 2. when there are not enough drivers for everyone, the rising prices make only those customers accept a ride whose needs are highest.

DEVELOPMENT HISTORY

During the initial development of the Uber app, the company created a think tank consisting of a nuclear physicist, a computational neuroscientist, and a machinery expert who worked on predicting demand for private hire car drivers and where demand is highest. Later in 2012, Uber launched its Uber Garage initiative in Chicago. The experimental program allowed Uber to partner with local taxi cab drivers, alerting them when an app user requested a ride. The company also introduced uberX in 2012, a service option which allows local drivers to respond to notifications on the Uber app by driving customers in their own non-luxury cars. During 2013, Uber offered its first non-car option when it launched UBERChopper rides from New York City to the Hamptons for $3000 each.

REQUIREMENTS FOR DRIVING

In some markets, where leasing arrangements for vehicles are available, the only requirement for driving for Uber, other than appropriate age, health, and ability to drive, is passing a background check. Both a smartphone, called a “device” by Uber, and a vehicle may be leased. Legislation in some cities (such as Lagos) requires individuals who drive for Uber to also own a valid Drivers license. As stated above, Uber is a mobile app company and therefore does not employ drivers. As a result, Uber drivers are considered independent contractors.

BENEFITS

Uber gives consumers a choice between regulated taxi cab companies and other forms of transportation, and can potentially provide drivers with “flexible and independent jobs”. Users can track the car picking them up on their smartphone, which allows them to know when it will arrive. A receipt will be automatically sent via email.

As Uber does not require cars to be hailed, its drivers can more easily pick up customers in less built up neighbourhoods. For this reason, Bloomberg Review said that Uber helps the poor by making it easier for them to get a taxi. It also helps reduce congestion as, “because Ubers can’t accept street hails, they do much less unnecessary driving-around than either yellow cabs (who are cruising for hails) or individuals (who are looking for a parking spot).” This assumes that there is no extra traffic created by people who would otherwise have used public transport or walked.

How The New Oba Of Benin Will Be Crowned: Details Of The Traditional Processes

ambassador-eheneden-erediauwaIndeed, all is now set for the Crown Prince of the Benin Kingdom, Ambassador Eheneden Erediauwa and Edaiken N’Uselu to begin the journey from his temporary palace at Uselu in Egor Local Government to Benin-City, where he will be crowned the 39th Oba of Benin.

But for the rescheduled Edo Governorship election, the 10-day journey of the crown to the Palace of the Oba of Benin would have ended on September 26, 2016. Right now the journey will finally terminate on October 20, 2016, they day the Crown Prince is expected to wear the crown of his ancestors.

Among the rites already performed during Emwinekhuan included the Iviorhue rites representing purity and peace which were performed by Ihogbe Chiefs, headed by Chief Leteman.

The Ihogbe head was delegated by the Ihama N’Ihogbe, the Izakhue and Isoton where the Crown Prince trekked to Benin with 201 Chiefs.

The performance of Isoton enabled the Edaiken to formally take over the position of her transited father.

It was gathered that the Edaiken will never step foot on some of the villages and shrines he had visited to perform some rites as part of the coronation process once he is crownd as “Oba”, such  villages are Ughoton Ovbiogie among others.

However, just as all the ancient rites were observed according to dates and numbers in the Funeral of Oba Erediuwa, so will it be in the coronation of Prince Erediauwa. Prince Erediauwa is epected to trek through the ancient path his forebearers took from Uselu to ascend the throne in Benin, infulfilment of the Benin’s “Odeobawu”, which means the path of an Oba never dies”.

Every Chief knows the role to play but the coronation rites are the functions of 7 prominent Chief otherwise known as the Usama N’Ihiron. It was during the reign of Oba Ewuare in the 15th Century that granted the Ihama N’Igun a special right carry out a background function at the coronation ceremony.

benin-crown-princeThe Usama N’Ihinron also known as Edion consist of Chiefs Oliha, Edohen, Ezomo, Ero, Eholo N’Ire, Oloton and Edaiken.

Chief Oliha, who pronounces the Edaiken as Oba, is also the Chief Priest of the collective ancestors of the Uzama.

On a day set by the Crown Prince to leave his palace Uselu, he would be escorted by Chiefs from the Uselu Community.  Immediately he leaves the Edaiken Palace, the gehe is closed and would not be inhabited again until another Edaiken is installed.

On his way to Benin, the Crown Prince makes a symbolic climbing of a palm tree that has lived over 500 years called “Udin Amamieson Amieuwa (suffer before pleasure).

The palm tree was first climbed by Oba Ewuare during his suffering days, when he was hungry to eat of its nuts. Since then, every Crown Prince had to perform the ceremony of climbing the palm tree.

From there, the Crown Prince will be escorted to Iya-Akpan, a moat situated along the Benin-Lagos Express road, where Chiefs from Oredo will take over and Chiefs from Uselu will return home.

The Edaiken (Crown Prince) will walk through Iguisi to Eko-Ohae (Bachelors’ camp) where he will stay for three days.

From there he moves to Uzama, venue of the coronation rites. Uzama was where Prince Oranmiyan built and lived because of resistance from Ogiamen. It was Oba Ewedo in the 15th Century that moved the palace to the present location while at Uzama, the Edaiken proceeds to use, a suburb in Benin to choose a title he will be known by as an Oba.

It is said that before this ceremony, the Edaiken never knows the name he will bear as an Oba. It was at use that Oba Eweka 1, son of Oranmiyan, first spoke his first words “Owomika”, after playing the “Akhu” traditional marble game.

After the use ceremony, the Edaiken returns to Uzama where the coronation rites will be completed and he is pronounced an “Oba”.

His public appearance as an Oba would be to be presented to his people. But before then, he would have to cross a bridge at Isekhere, where he would be assisted by Chief Isekhere across the now dried up Omi Oteghele River on his way to ascend the throne.

The river is no longer there but a symbolic bridge is constructed there and it is over the bridge that the Isekhere helps the Oba to cross over.

Across the river, the Ogiamien would be waiting for a duel with the new monarch following which the Ogiamen and his followers would flee. The Oba would then proceed to Urho-Okpota, where he receives Staff of Office from the Governor as well as performs some ceremonies before moving into the palace.

After 7 days, he assembles his “army” for the battle of Ekiokpagha, where he engages the Ogiamien in a moek battle. This battle is a re-enactment of a real battle between Oba Ewedo and Ogiamen.

Meanwhile, preparation are in top gear for the Crown Prince’s eventual arrival of 39th Oba of Benin Kingdom. The ancient palace is now wearing a new look with new buildings being erected apparently to befit the modern times.

oba-rilwan-akiolu-of-lagos-504x315Oba Rilwan Babatunde Osuolale Aremu Akiolu is the paramount ruler of Lagos and the chairman Lagos State council of Obas. The Council of Obas and Chiefs is one body, which has the capacity to contribute phenomenonally to good governance in the State by constantly availing government of its wisdom and sound advice: using its tremendous influence to mobilize popular support for public policy as well as being an important source of communication and feedback between the government and the grassroots.

As an institution, the Council of Obas and Chiefs is as old as Lagos State itself. It was established following the creation of Lagos State through the Council of Obas and Chiefs of Lagos State, Edict 1969 which came into force in April, 1969. The erstwhile Council of Obas and Chiefs, which was constituted in December 1995 with Thirty-One members, was dissolved in 2007.

The 73 year old Oba  who has been on the throne since May 2003, has been able to work with prominent Lagos Obas to bring about the new face of Lagos under the Gov. Ambode administration. The new Council has a total of 51 members drawn from the 5 divisions of the State. The Oba of Lagos is the permanent Chairman of the State Council of Obas and Chiefs with 4 Vice-Chairmen drawn from the remaining  4 divisions of the State namely Epe, Badagry, Ikorodu and Ikeja.

‘Stop Using The Galaxy Note 7’, Samsung Warns

galaxy-note-7Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. Has put a stop to the sales of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones on Tuesday and told owners to stop using them.

The company said in a statement in Seoul that it was investigating reports of fires from the phone by consumers.

“Consumers with either an original Galaxy Note 7 or replacement Galaxy Note 7 device should power down and stop using the device,” the company said.

Samsung is now considering permanently halting sales of its flagship smartphones as an option, a source familiar with the matter said.

Fresh reports of fires in replacement devices prompted new warnings from regulators, phone carriers and airlines.

However, Samsung Spokeswoman said that nothing had been decided about future sales plans.

The world’s top smartphone maker said it had asked all global carriers to stop sales of the Note 7s and the exchange of original devices for replacements.

The company is offering to exchange Note 7s for other products or refund them.

Samsung’s decision to pull Note 7s off the shelves for the second time in less than two months could result in huge financial and reputational costs.

Analysts say a permanent end to Note 7 sales could cost Samsung up to $17 billion and tarnish its other phone products in the minds of consumers and carriers.

Investors wiped $18.8 billion off Samsung Electronics’ market value on Tuesday as its shares closed down eight per cent – their biggest daily percentage decline since 2008.

The premium device launched in August was supposed to compete with Apple Inc’s latest iPhone for supremacy in the smartphone market.

However, within days of the launch, images of charred Note 7s began appearing on social media, in the first sign that something was amiss with the gadget.

Samsung has since recalled 2.5 million Note 7s due to faulty batteries.

“This has probably killed the Note 7 brand name – who knows if they will even be allowed to re-release it,” Mr Edward Snyder, Managing Director of Charter Equity Research, said.

“By the time they fix the problem, they have to go through recertification and requalification, and by the time that happens, they are going up against the (Galaxy) S8 launch.”

Arrest Of Judges: We Are Having 3 Arms Of Corruption- Shehu Sanni

Shehu SaniMr. Sani, the All Progressives Congress Senator representing Kaduna Central, has said that the three arms of Nigeria’s government – Executive, Legislature and Judiciary – are now bugged by corruption.this in the wake of the sting operation conducted by the State Security Service, leading to the arrest of some judges for alleged corrupt practices.

In the early hours of Saturday, SSS operatives raided residences of some judges Gestapo style. No few than 15 judges are under investigation, with 7 already in custody.

Mr. Sani said the allegations against the judges completed a circle of corruption running around the three arms of government in Nigeria.

“With mountains of allegations of corruption in the kitchen cabinet of Mr. President; with mountains of allegations of corruption in the Parliament; with mountains of allegations of corruption in the

Judiciary, now we are having a three Arms of corruption,” said Mr. Sani.

Key members of the President’s Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, including the Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari; Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi; and Interior Minister, Abdurhaman Dambazzau, have come under spotlight for alleged corrupt practices.

In the National Assembly, apart from the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who is facing trial for alleged false asset declaration; fugitives like Buruji Kashamu and Joshua Dariye; and former governors like Danjuma Goje and Godswill Akpabio have cases with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Also, the Speaker of the House of Representatives was accused of corruption and abuse of office in the 2016 budget process by Abdulmumin Jibrin, former appropriations committee chairman.

Mr. Sani, in a statement sent to Premium Times, said the action of the SSS amounted to “sadism” and smacked of totalitarianism if due process was not followed.

“The raid on the residences of the Supreme Court judges if done with a proper court order is justified but if done without a proper court order is nothing but sadism.

“Support for search or arrest without warrant irrespective of the gravity of suspicion is a tacit endorsement of tendencies of a totalitarian state,” the Senator said.

But if the SSS followed due process of law, he continued, defending the judges despite “evidences of harvest of cash in their houses is nothing but a wholesale endorsement of corruption.”

The SSS has defended its action, saying it acted within provisions of the law. Similarly, the presidency said the action was not a war against the Judiciary, but against corruption, assuring of regard for the bench.

Admonishing the judiciary, Mr. Sani said the bench “should not be and must not be a cash counter.”

He added that, “impunity is rooted in a society where Justice is for the highest bidder; corrupt Judges are merchants of Justice; and commercialization of Justice puts Justice on tender.”

He also warned the Federal Government against tyrannical tendencies, and breaching law to pursue its anti-corruption fight.

The lawmaker said: “For the SSS and the Federal Government this is my take:

1-Rule of law is the most potent weapon in the fight against corruption in a democratic society;

2-Each time we circumvent the rule of law for expediency, we reinforce the pillar of tyranny.

3-It’s not the good we achieve when we cut short the rule of law, it’s the evil that could be justified

using the same route.

4-Whatever you achieve using the rule of law is insured against moral stain.

5-To break the law in order to enforce the law is to extinguish the flame of justice upon which the rule of law is alighted.”

While stressing that the Judiciary risks losing public confidence if “rulings turn to products of transaction”, he warned that security agencies should not be immune from respect for rule of law.

“We must not give a blank cheque to security agencies which can be abused,” he said

Femi-Falana (1)Popular Lagos lawyer and Human rights activist Femi Falana, SAN, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to probe some former governors of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

Speaking at a dinner organised by the executives of the Senior Staff Club of the University of Ibadan in Oyo State in honour of members recently appointed by the Federal Government, Falana disclosed that he would apply for an order of Mandamus to compel the anti-graft agency to probe and prosecute the Deposit Money Banks over loans allegedly granted them by some former governors of the CBN.

Disclosing that the former governors of CBN gave out the loans between 2006 and 2011, the Senior Advocate pointed out that it was important to know if the huge sum had been refunded to the treasury.

Falana also stated that he had written a petition to the EFCC on the loans, adding that the matter is yet to be attended to.

According to the senior advocate, a former CBN governor gave out $7bn to 14 banks in 2006 while the sum of $5bn was also given to some banks by another CBN governor in 2011.

He added that the same governor later handed over N2.5tn to those he described as economic saboteurs.

“We cannot be claiming to be broke when money given out as loans or deposits are not accounted for. The EFCC must probe, recover the funds and prosecute anybody found culpable,” he said.

Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu during the 3rd Town Hall Meeting of Governor Akinwnumi Ambode for Lagos Central Senatorial District, accused former Nigerian president, Olusegun Obasanjo for not granting Lagos a special status while he was in power.

Akiolu said Obansanjo had the opportunity to have granted Lagos a special status during his eight years tenure, but he never did it in spite of the pressure mounted on him.

“Obasanjo is the cause of Lagos not getting a special status,” saying he personally led eminent Lagosians to meet him during his tenure to ask for a special status for Lagos.” He said Obasanjo told him and others that he had already drafted the special status plan for Lagos, but lamented that the former president never fulfilled that promise,

He further went on to say Yar’Ardua had promised to grant Lagos but for his death. “Yar’Ardua had promised to grant Lagos a special status. If Yar’Ardua had not died, it would have happened by now,” he said.

osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said the free National Home Grown School Feeding programme of this administration will commence in some states this month. Osinbajo made this known during an interview session at the ongoing Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja yesterday October 11th.

He said:

“Definitely before the end of this month, we expect that several states would have come on stream with their Home Grown School Feeding Programme. The programme will energise agriculture in the different states because it is what you plant that you feed the children with. We will be hiring caterers and cooks in each state because it will be Federal Government-funded from primaries 1 to 3 and the state governments hopefully would be able to cater for the other classes.”‎

According to Osinbajo, the Federal Government would fund the scheme for pupils in Primary One to Primary three while state governments are expected to take responsibility for pupils in primary four to six.

‎Osinbajo in the interview, also revealed that the Federal government would employ 200,000 out of the 500,000 graduates it promised to employ through its N-power jobs programme.

“We expect that before the end of the month, we will engage 200,000 out of the 500,000 unemployed graduates the Buhari administration plans to hire in the N-Power jobs programme. The direct government job is meant to keep these young people occupied, pay them some amount of money and also give them a device, which will also help them to learn several skills that they can develop as time goes on. We expect that before the end of this month, we should have engaged 200,000 of them and we are hoping that before the end of the year we should have engaged more,” he said.

He also disclosed that before the end of the month, market women and artisans would be granted soft loans ranging from N60,000 to N100,000.

Speaking through his Commissioner for Information and Communication Strategy, Mr. Tony Nnacheta, after an executive council meeting, the Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano urged the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to pay back the N43bn the state spent on rehabilitation of federal roads.

The governor said the repayment was necessary to facilitate the rehabilitation of more federal roads in the state, which are in deplorable conditions. He said;

“The total sum we expended on federal roads in the state was N48bn. But on their own, the Federal Government worked it out and arrived at N43bn. We agreed and asked them to pay us but nothing has come from them. This has made us to stop the rehabilitation of federal roads in the state. We need this money to enable us to do more federal roads in the state because our people are suffering because of the state of federal roads in the state.”
