Meet The New Women Who Run Kaduna With Gov. Nasir El-Rufai

Governor El-Rufai is demonstrating his belief in the saying: “when you empower a woman, you empower a whole generation”, by appointing women to lead the state. City People’s ASABE NDOMA brings you a list of these women and the offices they occupy.

BINTA ABDULKARIM

Prof Abdulkarim was recently appointed the Chairman of Kaduna Environmental Protection Agency (KEPA). She is also the coordinator of the Gender Policy Unit of Ahmadu Bello University which targets the advancement of gender best practices in the university among staff and students. Since her appointment some months back, this academic professor has been doing all she can to ensure the mandate of the agency is met.

FAUSAT IBIKUNLE

Fausat is an Architect by training. She has worked as a Deputy Director, Works, Health and Human Services of the FCT. Fausat is now the chief executive of the Kaduna State Urban Planning and Development Authority. This ABU graduate  had a successful  career at the FCT.

ABIGAIL YAKOWA

Abigail is one of the daughters of the late Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, the first Governor of the State from Southern Kaduna, who died in a plane crash. Abigail is on the board of the Kaduna State Water Corporation.

HAUWA BABA AHMED

Hauwa needs no introduction around here, because she is a veteran broadcaster who made a name in the 80’s in NTA. Hauwa is now the chairman of the Kaduna State Media Corporation. She was married to the late veteran broadcaster Khalifa Baba Ahmed.

MAIRO MANDARA

This medical Doctor was in 2013 appointed as the Country Representative of the Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation. Mairo is a consultant obstetrician and gynecologist. She has extensive knowledge of public health systems and child health programmes.

A graduate of University of Jos, she was also a Senior Country Adviser in Nigeria to the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. She also worked as the Nigeria – based Health Systems Adviser for the Earth Institute at New York’s Columbia University. She is on the board of the Kaduna State Drugs and Medical Supply Management Agency.

MARY AMBI

She is on the Board of the Kaduna State Media Corporation.

AMINA SALIHU

Amina is the chairman of the Kaduna State rehabilitation board. She is a doctor of political science, women’s rights advocate and farmer. She lectures at ABU and was a senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister (2004 – 2007). She is a campaigner for the rights of the poor. She is on the board of the Nigeria Women’s Trust Fund.

ALISABATU DADA ONAZI

Alisabatu Onazi is the second women in the history of the state to occupy the position of Head of Service. This seasoned Civil Servant hails from Kagoma Local Government. In her late 50’s, Alisabatu recently introduced the biometric verification exercise for all civil servants in the state. She said the exercise will provide government  accurate and reliable record of its personnel.

The exercise  has been hailed by all in the state. They claim that as a civil servant, Alisabatu knows what to do to  improve the welfare of the civil-servants but they must appear in person with their letter of appointment, last promotion and letter of identification. She said the exercise will determine if the billions spent on staff salaries are being paid to identifiable and verifiable civil servants.

SAUDE AMINAT MOHAMMED

Saude’s appointment as Personal Secretary to the Governor is the first of its kind in the state. Saude, a graduate of Economics from ABU, holds a Master’s Degree in Advertising and Marketing from Coventry University. She worked as a researcher with the Good Governance Group (3G) and served as Secretary to the Finance Sub-Committee of the Kaduna State APC Transition Committee. Saude is the grand daughter of Rev. Canon H.D. Mohammed of Wusasa, Zaria. He was the former Chief Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission and Chairman, Code of Conduct Bureau.

AMINA RUTH DYERIS SIJUWADE

She is presently the State’s Commissioner for Justice. Amina, who is Kagoma by tribe, is one of the two female commissioners appointed by Gov. El-Rufai. In her late 40’s, Amina holds degrees in English and Law and has been a legal practitioner, NGO worker and consultant. Amina is the daughter of Gen. Dyeris, one of the prominent Army Officer Southern Kaduna has produced.

RABI M.G. ABDULSALAM

She is the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development. Rabi holds a Masters in Public Admin and has worked previously with two Governors in the state. Sources describe her as hardworking and down-to-earth. She is from Kaduna North.
